I'm planning to learn digital drawing, which has led me to ask: which would be worthwhile spending on--a graphics tablet, an iPAD, or a touchscreen netbook? The best answer, for now, seems to be none of the above. I'll wait until manufacturers convince themselves that they should invest in the software and hardware changes that need to happen in order to target buyers who are looking for touchscreen computers specifically designed for drawing.

There is an app in app store named igraphicpad that claim to turn an iPad into a graphic tablet. I'll give it a try and post feedback.

Wacom needs to go to Apple and propose they either partner or compete. As partners a Cintiq 12WX,21UX could easily be expanded to a complete intel based tablet computer with (optional usb keyboard) running OSX instead of the tablet being optional to a LCD and Keyboard, sorry macbook end of line. Alternatively Cintiq could build the platform and install Linux and run OSX or Windows in a VM but then they'd have the non-Apple brand stigma in the art community so maybe licensing the hardware to Apple would be the way to go. Either way it's not like it couldn't already be available if companies really listened to customers. The iPAD is just another intentionally crippled fad gadget if you can't draw on it. Drawing on a non-LCD tablet along side a computer is obsolete and no-one should even consider taking the time to learn to use one. To any manufacturer of tablet tech IF I'm going to buy any tablet it needs to be a complete computer with an adequate interface. It doesn't need to be 5oz weight and it needs to be large enough to use without bifocals.

As a graphic designer I am already exploring the Ipad as graphic tablet replacement and so far have been happy with it for two reasons. One, I can take it into the field and concept ideas in front of clients. Two, it allows me to work anywhere I am inspired. So from me, it's two thumbs up.

I firmly do not believe ipad can be great to use for digital painting. The sensitivity, touch size (2mm?)are too different.
May be other Table PC adopt pressure resistive screen can fulfill the task.
cheers,
